DeWitt City Council unanimously approves Granger Waste 7-year contract extension, accepts DAESA budget and easements

The DeWitt City Council voted unanimously on March 9 to award Granger Waste Services, Inc. a seven-year contract extension for refuse services beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2033, and authorized Mayor Susan Leeming and Clerk-Treasurer Sarah Stoltzfus to sign the extension on the city's behalf. The motion was moved by Councilmember Donohue and seconded by Councilmember Landgraf.
At the same meeting the council received and placed on file the Fiscal Year 2026–2027 DAESA (DeWitt Area Emergency Services Authority) annual operating budget. Councilmember Landgraf said members plan to incorporate a capital improvement fund for equipment and apparatus; the council voted, on a motion by Landgraf and seconded by Mayor Pro-Tem Hunsaker, to place the budget on file with a proposed City of DeWitt contribution of $370,975.64.
Councilmembers also approved two easements with Consumers Energy for properties at 119 West Jefferson and 124 East Jefferson, noting the easements will allow burial of overhead powerlines and utilities to benefit the project. The council authorized the City Clerk to sign the easement documents.
The council approved a letter of support for the East Dill Sanitary Sewer Extension applications to the Congressional Direct Spending (CDS) program for Senators Peters and Slotkin; the motion was offered by Councilmember Donohue and seconded by Councilmember Whitman.
On procedural business, the council voted to cancel the March 23, 2026 regular meeting. All votes on motions noted in the minutes were recorded as unanimous. Present for the votes were Mayor Susan Leeming and councilmembers Hunsaker, Donohue, Whitman, Landgraf and Kellogg; Councilmember VanDyke was excused.
The actions taken affect refuse services procurement, the city's proposed contribution to regional emergency services, and local infrastructure planning. The council made no changes to the DAESA budget line items at the meeting beyond the stated intent to add a capital improvement fund for apparatus, and the Consumers Energy easements were approved to support an unspecified project in the minutes.
