Council authorizes up to $35,000 for chip spreader after on-site dump-truck accident; snowplow upgrade slated

Administrator Aitken told the council that during a chip-seal operation on Vista last week one town dump truck ran into another, taking both out of service and destroying a spreader. To finish the Vista project this fall, Aitken and Public Works Director Zack Edwards proposed purchasing a rock spreader from California for $32,750, shipping included.
Councilman Ellis moved to authorize the expenditure of up to $35,000 for the chip spreader equipment; Councilman Merrill seconded the motion and it passed on a unanimous voice vote. Aitken indicated the equipment would allow crews to complete the chip seal work next week if weather permits and said the machine would improve future chip-seal operations; he noted new machines retail for roughly half a million dollars.
Aitken also presented information about replacement snowplow equipment with snow gates for the town’s loaders, which he said would significantly reduce snow berms left in driveways during plowing. The cost for the snowplow upgrades would be approximately $88,000 after a $2,000 trade-in per plow for the old plows. Because the expense was not budgeted, the council agreed to prepare a budget amendment for the Oct. 14 meeting.
