Construction underway on "the May" housing project; town and bank to start prequalification later this year

Mark Maxwell, special project manager for the Town of Bluffton, told the Affordable Housing Committee that construction on the May housing project has begun and is moving according to schedule. "The rough grading is is complete for the most part for the parking roadways," Maxwell said, and added that building pads and stormwater work are next. "The contractor plans on starting underground utilities next week," he said.
Maxwell said the contractor and the bank are coordinating sign-up and financing. "With the completion date right now, the target is the 1st quarter of next year for move in," Maxwell said, and he explained the bank and developer plan to begin prequalifying buyers closer to the end of the year to shorten the time between completion and mortgage issuance.
Committee members asked how residents were being solicited; staff said the town is not accepting formal applications and instead is collecting names to pass to Coastal State Bank. "Applications are going through Coastal State Bank," a staff member said; the bank's representative is scheduled to attend a future meeting to provide more information.
The committee agreed not to post a 'future home' sign at the site immediately to avoid premature inquiries; members said they will wait until closer to completion before marketing units.
