Following the board's approval to recruit an Equity and Engagement Manager, Executive Director Charlie Baker told the Executive Committee on Feb. 2 that the position was posted and that the application deadline is Feb. 25. Emma Vaughn, communications manager, said she will share the posting with board members and alternates.
Baker said the commission engaged the firm Creative Discourse to help refine the job description. "We engaged with Creative Discourse to help refine the wording in the job description. The application deadline is February 25th," he said.
Committee members raised concerns about the posting's language. Mike O'Brien said he had "read the posting but wonders if there is too much focus on race, since the position is about being more inclusive, we do not want to exclude anyone from applying." Bard Hill said he "struggles with this as well," and urged care not to state hopes as facts. Treasurer John Zicconi commented the commission should avoid letting perfection get in the way of progress.
Why it matters: The new staff role is intended to shape CCRPC outreach and equity efforts; its framing and recruitment approach will affect applicant pools and how equity work is implemented across member municipalities.
Next steps: Staff will continue recruitment through Feb. 25 and report back to the board on applicants and any adjustments to the posting.
