TIFT COUNTY — Residents told county officials at a March 3 public hearing that street repairs, home-rehabilitation assistance and a community park in the Phillipsburg neighborhood should be priorities if Tift County applies for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of up to $1,000,000 from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
Sarah Rowley of Sunbelt Consulting opened the hearing by reading the purpose statement and explaining that the potential CDBG award would primarily benefit low- and moderate-income residents and could be used for housing, public facilities and economic development. Rowley shared the DCA web address, said some funding may be available for hurricane relief and repairs, and provided a QR code linking to an online survey for public input.
Several attendees spoke during the public-comment portion. A resident who said she lives on Apple Street urged paving for that block. Another resident asked about grant opportunities to repair her home. A speaker reported that S. Park Avenue, near the funeral home, needs repairs. Multiple citizens asked for a community park in the Phillipsburg neighborhood and described recurring flooding there; another resident reported a sink hole on GC Hill Road and requested its repair.
Rowley referenced a past CDBG project in Phillipsburg that addressed street and drainage problems and said residents expressed satisfaction with that earlier work. Organizers encouraged attendees to complete the online survey to help prioritize projects for any pre-application.
No formal motions or votes were recorded at the hearing. The public-comment period concluded with no further questions, and the hearing was adjourned at 6:31 p.m. on March 3, 2026.
The county listed Mike Walker, assistant county manager, as present; the hearing record also names Tony Jony McBrayer as chairman and Miriam B. Jordan as county clerk. The next procedural step, if the county staff chooses to proceed, would be preparing a CDBG pre-application to DCA that reflects priorities gathered from public input.
