Kettering to replace State Farm Park playground; council approves $104,000 contract funded by insurance

Kettering City Council voted October 28 to authorize a contract with Michigan Playgrounds LLC (doing business as Midwest Recreation) to replace playground equipment and surfacing at State Farm Park after the site was damaged by fire earlier this year. City staff said the project is being funded by insurance proceeds, with the city responsible for a $2,500 deductible, and estimated the total cost at $104,000.

During public comment, resident Tyler Scott asked about the timetable and cost; staff responded that the packet lists an estimated $104,000 and that installation and site replacement are expected in May 2026. In the council meeting, finance staff presented a supplemental appropriation related to the playground replacement. The agenda’s appropriation line lists a $14,300 net transfer figure, while a later explanation from the finance presenter identified $104,300 requested for the capital improvement fund to cover playground replacement and associated transfers; council proceeded with the approvals on the record.

The parks department representative said the project has insurance proceeds available to cover the cost except for the deductible and that construction timing targets spring 2026. Council members voted in favor of the contract and the related appropriation action.

Council members said they were pleased the project will restore a community playground that residents had asked about during public comment and that the timing would allow installation ahead of the summer season.
