Kettering council approves salt contract, road grant applications and park and budget measures in unanimous votes

City staff said the awarded price is $736 per ton, roughly 15% higher than last season; council noted the city’s budget includes a winter salt allocation. The resolution carried on a unanimous vote.
South Dixie resurfacing (ODOT): Council approved agreements with the Ohio Department of Transportation that would let Kettering serve as the lead agency for resurfacing South Dixie Highway from Dorothy Lane to the Dayton corporation line. Engineering staff said the city secured roughly $942,000 in grant funding from the regional planning commission; the work is currently programmed in state fiscal year 2030 but staff said they will seek earlier scheduling if funds permit.
Safety grant: The fire department’s request to apply for a CenterPoint Energy community safety grant (maximum $2,500, no local match) advanced with council approval; staff indicated funds would be used to purchase thermal imaging cameras if the award is secured.
Parks grant: The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department was authorized to apply for an Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks grant to renovate playground equipment and surfacing at Indian River Park. The grant requires a 25% local match, which staff said will come from budgeted funds; if awarded, construction is expected late this year or early next year.
Budget adjustments: Finance staff requested supplemental appropriations including a $500,000 increase to expand the economic development façade and demolition grant pool to $650,000 (city funds already committed but reallocated in the budget) and $2,500 in sponsorships for Juneteenth activities. Council approved the appropriations unanimously.
All measures passed on roll call with council members recorded as voting yes.
