Organizers outline three-weekend Renaissance Fair plan; Select Board defers permit decision pending safety and fee reviews

Organizers Melanie Huard and David Brown appeared before the Select Board on April 23 to present plans to hold a Renaissance Fair over three consecutive weekends at the Acton Fairgrounds. Because state liquor licensing now treats each weekend as a separate event, the applicants said the event must be considered as three distinct permits.
The organizers described changes from prior years: a new parking and security team, removal of last year’s donation-collection point, and additional security to address incidents when a coinciding event drew fence-hopping attendees. Applicants noted plans to provide signage and to arrange EMT coverage; the Town Administrator warned that wage increases for emergency personnel could raise event fees for EMT services.
The Select Board chose not to act and asked staff to gather input from the Sheriff’s (York County) contract representatives, Code Enforcement and the Fire Chief before the item returns to the agenda in roughly two weeks so that residents can attend and speak. Steve Buycik later asked the Board to post 'no parking' signs on one side of East Shore Drive to avoid single-lane traffic during the fair; the Board added that item to its follow-up list.
No permit or fee decisions were made at the April 23 session; the Board said it will advertise the future meeting and invite the Fire Chief to discuss safety and emergency coverage.
