Winthrop School Board: elections, unanimous votes on grievance, personnel and policy actions

Minutes and personnel: The board approved the minutes of the Dec. 17, 2025 meeting as written. The board moved to employ Patrick Hassan as a middle school social studies teacher and approved the appointment unanimously.
Policies: The board carried a second-reading vote approving policies on student and employee discrimination and harassment complaint procedures. It also took first readings on multiple policies (pest management, immunizations, weapons/violence policy adding nicotine, dropout prevention, transportation and drug/alcohol testing for drivers); the first-reading items were presented and accepted for further consideration.
Field trip and committees: The board approved a proposed nine-day high-school field trip to Costa Rica (February 2027 school vacation) with a quoted student cost of $4,100 and approved chairperson appointments to subcommittees (finance, policy, negotiations, wellness, dropout prevention, adult ed) as discussed.
What this means: Most formal actions at the meeting were unanimous; several decisions (notably budget and maintenance funding) remain for future meetings.
