"Shall the School Board of Directors be authorized to negotiate and enter into tuition contracts for grades 6 through 12 with nearby school administrative units for a term of two to 10 years and on such other terms and conditions as the School Board of Directors may negotiate in the best interest of the town and the students," the superintendent read as example wording for the article and said the board must finalize details before sending it to the selectmen for review and scheduling.
Under the superintendent's proposal, the board would finalize an article on Dec. 18, the board of selectmen would consider it on Dec. 19, a public hearing could be held during a selectmen meeting on Jan. 2, and a town meeting could take place on Jan. 16. The superintendent told the board she had contacted a neighboring district, which indicated interest in continuing discussions about tuition arrangements.
The superintendent recommended creating an ad hoc tuition‑agreement committee to collect community input and prepare materials so the board can move quickly once the town authorizes negotiations. She emphasized the time sensitivity because the district's current tuition contract runs through June 30 and neighboring districts need an enrollment approximation for budget planning.
Board members voiced support for proceeding on the proposed timeline but also stressed the need to review the draft article carefully before voting to place it on the warrant. The board did not adopt final contract language at the meeting; instead, members approved a motion to proceed with the proposed timetable and the process for sending an article to the selectmen, with a small committee to assist staff in gathering information.
Next steps: the board is expected to review a draft warrant article at its Dec. 18 meeting and, if approved, ask the selectmen to schedule the required public hearing and town meeting dates.
