County applies for state funding to add DC fast charging at Career Technical Center

Martin County staff submitted an application Sept. 30 to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Volkswagen Mitigation Phase 1 Zero Emission Vehicle DC Fast Charge Infrastructure Program seeking funding for a charging station at the Career Technical Center/Telecenter along the US‑64 corridor.
County Manager David Bone said the estimated project cost is $86,362.50. Although a local match was not required, the Board approved a 5% local match — $4,112.50 — should the grant be awarded. The Board approved the submission and the conditional match as part of the consent agenda.
The application was prepared in coordination with the Martin County Board of Education staff, the Mid‑East Commission, and the Tourism Development Authority. The program prioritizes designated corridors including US‑64 from Rocky Mount to Manteo.
If funded, the project would add DC fast charging infrastructure intended to expand charging access on a priority corridor; the Board did not authorize construction contracts at the Oct. 9 meeting and will consider any award and subsequent procurement at a later date.
