Commissioners delay decision on former Williamston Middle School until Jan. 10

The Martin County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 9 to delay a response to the Martin County Board of Education about the former Williamston Middle School property until Jan. 10, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.
County Manager David Bone told commissioners the Board of Education met Oct. 7 and asked the county either to close on the property or provide a closing date by the end of October. Bone said prior negotiations and a contemplated plan had not materialized, and the Board of Education sought clarity on the county’s intentions.
After discussion about possible uses and the lack of a firm plan, Vice Chairman Dempsey Bond Jr. made a motion to postpone providing a closing date; Commissioner Joe R. Ayers seconded the motion, which passed unanimously (5-0).
The delay preserves time for staff and commissioners to further explore options for the building and gives the Board of Education a firm date by which the county will respond. No purchase agreement or transfer of title was approved at the meeting.
The Board will revisit the matter at or before its Jan. 10, 2020 deadline.
