Commissioners favor network security, stagger vehicle replacements and seek AV cuts to limit budget gap
Summary
IT asked for a technology refresh including a $79,000 juvenile-court AV upgrade and $185,000 computer refresh; commissioners prioritized network switches and urged IT to find cost savings. Commissioners debated replacing four or eight patrol vehicles and agreed to pare requests to reduce a multi-million vehicle/technology package.

IT and operations staff presented a suite of technology and fleet requests during the work session. The technology package included a $185,000 computer refresh for out-of-warranty machines, a network switch and firewall refresh (security prioritized by county IT), and an audiovisual upgrade for juvenile court estimated at $79,000. IT said several AV vendors and pieces of equipment are no longer supported and that the juvenile-court AV and audio systems have experienced recurring failures.
Commissioners expressed a clear priority: network and security hardware (switches, firewall) should be funded ahead of discretionary AV upgrades if cuts are required. Willie, the county IT director, said switches are expensive and time-sensitive and recommended maintaining the network-refresh budget; he and the AV engineer Scott offered to scope lower-cost AV options if the board wanted to reduce the $79,000 request.
On fleet replacements the sheriff argued for eight patrol vehicles (to replace wrecked units and restore spare capacity), while some commissioners pushed for a more phased schedule (four now, four later) to reduce immediate capital needs. The board noted more than $2.1 million must be cut from the vehicles and technology package to align with available revenues and suggested targeting lower-priority vehicle and AV items for deferment.
Staff and commissioners agreed to return updated, line-by-line spreadsheets that reflect the agreed cuts and priorities before the next work session and to prepare procurement timing for long-lead items.
