Beachwood City Council voted on Feb. 3 to place proposed amendments to the city planning and zoning code on first reading and to refer the package to the Planning & Zoning Commission for review and recommendation.
Mr. Mintz introduced the ordinance amending various sections of the planning and zoning code. Council member Schweickart said she had consulted brokers, developers and appraisers who suggested the proposed maximum square-footage limits might be too restrictive and could reduce future property values for longtime homeowners. Schweickart said she supports further changes and is willing to proceed with a first reading provided revisions are made.
Council member Taylor asked the administration to include, with each recommendation, a succinct narrative explaining the rationale and background to help residents and stakeholders understand proposed changes. The council president described the process: the Planning & Zoning Commission will review the referral, public hearings will be scheduled (no sooner than 30 days after a second reading), and council will have further readings before any final vote.
The referral keeps the process in the deliberative pipeline; no final zoning vote took place at the Feb. 3 meeting.
