Garfield 16 staff report salary-step changes, curriculum work and staffing needs

At the Nov. 12 meeting of the Board of Directors for Garfield County School District No. 16, staff provided several informational reports on staffing, curriculum and grants.
Chief Financial Officer Chelsey Gerard told the board that all salary schedules that use a step structure were revised to commence at step 1. Superintendent Dr. Jennifer A. Baugh and Assistant Superintendent Amber Clark reported that the district submitted its Unified Improvement Plan to the Colorado Department of Education and that the mathematics curriculum is being finalized; a science curriculum will be presented in the spring for board consideration.
Clark told the board that Grand Valley Middle School remains understaffed in the mathematics department. Clark also said the district has aligned Colorado READ Act processes, established a multi-lingual plan, and submitted a letter of intent to the Colorado Department of Education to participate in the Early Literacy Assessment Tool (ELAT) project if selected. The minutes note a luncheon for substitutes held Oct. 21 and a professional-development day on Nov. 18 offering academic and financial sessions for employees. The superintendent said district officials will update and clean up the human-resources and payroll systems.
District event items recorded in the minutes included a Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 12, a Harvest Feast hosted by the Grand Valley Center of Family Learning on Nov. 22, and the Grand Valley High School fall play scheduled Nov. 15–16; the minutes also note that the Grand Valley High School boys' soccer team qualified for the state tournament.
During board reports President Vincent T. Tomasulo described a Parachute Inn site-plan review that would convert the property to workforce housing (68 one- and two-bedroom units) and provided updates on Colorado River Board of Cooperative Education Services business including a potential conversion of Yampah Mountain High School to a charter school and a forthcoming executive-director recruitment.
