Garfield 16 board approves curricula, data system, equipment and multiple grants

On Aug. 13 the Garfield County School District No. 16 Board approved a package of curricula, a data warehouse purchase and several facility and grant acceptances, cumulatively including a $41,300 grounds contract and a $42,268 data-warehouse purchase.
At a regular meeting on Aug. 13, the Garfield County School District No. 16 Board of Directors approved a series of expenditures and program adoptions covering curriculum, facilities and data systems.
Key approvals included a Grounds and Maintenance proposal for $41,300 and an ABRE data-warehouse purchase for $42,268. Both motions passed on roll-call votes recorded as Brent Baker—aye, Keith Gronewoller—absent, Samuel W. Stewart—aye, Vincent T. Tomasulo—aye and Kimberly S. Whelan—aye.
The board approved adoption of Horizon SAT assessment-preparation services and multiple curriculum adoptions: multilingual curricula for Bea Underwood Elementary, Grand Valley Middle School and Grand Valley High School and for the Grand Valley Center for Family Learning; the Mystery Science curriculum for the Center for Family Learning and Bea Underwood Elementary; and a social studies curriculum for Grand Valley High School for $4,702.65. The board also retroactively approved purchases including an air compressor for the Transportation & Maintenance Building and Tyler Technology Content Manager Core and Online Shopping modules.
Facilities and grant actions included approval of retroactive HVAC motor repairs and replacement at the administration building, authorization of chemical disposal, acceptance of an Aspen Community Foundation Childhood Grant (terms accepted by the board), and acceptance of BEST grant terms and conditions for health, safety and HVAC improvements at Bea Underwood Elementary. The board approved Ropes Course improvements and a half-day schedule for students for homecoming on Oct. 11, 2024. All these actions were carried by recorded roll-call votes with the same four ayes and one absence unless otherwise noted.
During reports, CFO Chelsey Gerard said auditors will be in-district Oct. 14, 2024, with a preliminary audit to be presented in December, and Superintendent Dr. Jennifer A. Baugh noted Aug. 13 was the first day of school for students in grades 2–12 and provided a staffing/recruitment update. Board members also reported on local workforce housing and a planned partnership with Parachute/Battlement Mesa Park and Recreation and Colorado Mountain College on an Early Childhood Education Center.
Next steps: several items are implementation matters for staff (contracts, vendor onboarding, grant compliance) and the BEST grant work will be scheduled through operations once final terms are executed.
