Residents urge temporary traffic controls on South Hills Drive after Red Apple detour

Residents told the Wenatchee City Council during public comment that traffic routed from the Red Apple Road construction is creating safety hazards on South Hills Drive and nearby streets.
"A lot of the traffic has been routed ... onto South Hills Drive," said resident John Stoll, 1310 South Hills Drive, who described tight curves, hidden driveways and pedestrians walking without sidewalks. "If you drive 25 miles an hour, it's pretty good to navigate it, but nowadays, people like 40."
Toni Harrison, who said she has a blind driveway, said drivers are approaching at high speed and that elderly neighbors have had close calls. "This is a danger to the people who live here," she said, asking the council for clearer 'hidden driveway' signs and other temporary measures.
Polly Feehan, who also lives on South Hills Drive, urged cones or signage at Patsy Place and more police presence after describing an earlier scooter crash near a ditch. "As long as we're having more traffic, there's gonna be more things happen," she said.
Council members acknowledged the concerns and asked residents to provide contact information and email documentation so staff can follow up. Chair asked public works staff to be available for a site visit and said the city would look into potential short-term traffic-calming measures while the detour is in effect.
The council did not vote on specific traffic changes at the meeting; staff follow-up and possible temporary mitigations were the next steps.
