During the public comment period of the June 2 Bedford Heights council meeting, resident Darren Ford asked the city to issue a proclamation recognizing Daryl Johnson for his ongoing volunteer trash pickup along Columbus Road and near the bus stop. Ford said Johnson regularly cleans the corridor regardless of weather and urged a formal acknowledgement from the city.
Ford also urged the council to install a camera at the Bear Creek and Columbus Road intersection, saying he has observed drivers making illegal right turns on red and described near-miss incidents, including one where a child was nearly struck. The mayor acknowledged the volunteer’s efforts and said staff and the police chief have discussed traffic mitigation measures; the mayor said a speed hump had been scheduled for Bear Creek Drive and staff would monitor the corner. A speaker representing the police said there is an existing camera farther down the intersection and that the chief would follow up with the mayor.
The council did not take immediate legislative action on either request at the meeting but the mayor indicated staff would prepare a proclamation for Johnson and monitor the requested traffic-safety location.
