Angola mayor praises emergency crews after tornado, says he has asked congressional office to query National Weather Service

The Mayor opened Angola City Council’s June 15 meeting by praising municipal staff for their response to a recent tornado that caused downed trees and temporary road closures.

"My compliments to all our department heads and all our employees," the Mayor said, describing dispatch and fire‑department operations during the event as "extremely well" handled and professional. He said streets were reopened within about two hours and that crews would continue debris pickup through the week.

The Mayor told the council that the city experienced communication glitches and briefly reverted to a backup system. He said the town did not receive a timely tornado warning from the National Weather Service and that local spotters triggered sirens after observing the tornado. "We will be reaching out to the National Weather Service to find out why that happened that way," he said, adding that he had asked the congressional office to begin asking questions.

City public‑works staff and the fire department described their roles in clearing streets and triaging emergency calls. Public‑works staff reported a multi‑round debris pickup plan and urged residents to place debris at the curb or driveway for collection.

The Mayor also thanked utility crews that restored power where lines were impacted and noted the city is monitoring lingering communications issues. No formal action was taken during the report; the council moved on to scheduled agenda items.
