Canal Winchester outlines planned High Street, Gender Road and bridge repairs; short overnight ramp closure planned
Summary
City officials said High Street will have an abbreviated two‑week intersection closure after Labor Day for curb and pavement replacement and that Gender Road Phase 6 bridge work requires overnight ramp closures this weekend for beam repairs. City officials on Aug. 19 told the Canal Winchester City Council that a set of street and bridge projects will require short, targeted closures but that contractors are altering phasing to reduce around‑the‑clock lane restrictions.
Construction Services Director Mr Sims said the High Street intersection has been quiet since the summer festival and will be closed for roughly two weeks after Labor Day to remove curb and gutter and install new pavement. "The intersection closure will remain in place ... that'll give us the opportunity to basically take out the curb and gutter and everything inside of that and get new curb and gutter and a new pavement down," Sims said. Sidewalk work and finishing details along East Water Street and in front of nearby businesses will continue afterward.
Sims also described work on Gender Road Phase 6: contractors are pouring the west parapet wall, with curing and staining to follow, and crews will perform an emergency repair to bridge beams under the deck. "We're going to have a closure this Friday evening to ... early Monday morning," he said, adding that the most inconvenient portion will be a ramp closure for northbound Gender to westbound Route 33.
Council members pressed staff on duration and public notice. Sims said the team aims to avoid the deep, continuous lane closures that had been in the contract and instead create daytime, intermittent setups when possible: "They're looking very seriously at maybe being able not to have to put up the 24/7 closure but actually create enough work room to do most of the work and only need to do the periodic lane closures...and really minimize the amount of time we'll actually have it down to one lane."
The city also reported the street program and new pickleball courts are at "punchout" stage, with a remaining parking‑lot light to install, and that headworks replacement plans are arriving in stages to speed review and move the project to bidding.
Council urged staff to push traffic and closure notices through all channels and to coordinate with adjacent businesses and events. The council did not take a vote on project scope during the meeting; staff said specific closures and notifications will be posted before the scheduled weekend ramp work.
