New assessor introduced; Select Board appoints Scott Grady to school board until June

Joe Murphy of Murphy Appraisal Services Inc. introduced himself as the towns assessor, saying he has served as the assessor in nearby communities and has begun auditing homestead exemptions, veterans' exemptions and current-use classifications. Murphy said he and his father will collaborate to ensure assessments are equitable and that he expects a learning curve with the town's records system.
Separately, the board nominated and appointed Scott Grady to the school board through the end of the fiscal year. Board members noted that no background check had been done for the appointee and that the appointment would last until June. The motion to appoint carried without recorded public objection at the Jan. 15 meeting.
Staff said Murphy will be in the office most Tuesdays for the next several months as he continues audits and familiarization work; the board welcomed him.
