The Select Board voted on Jan. 15 to continue splitting the new 1% state Family and Medical Leave payroll tax, with the town and employees each paying 0.5% until the June town meeting when the legislative body will determine whether the town will pay the full 1%.
Staff explained the new state program took effect Jan. 1 and that many towns are currently splitting the contribution rather than having the town cover the full 1% payroll tax. The presenter recommended continuing the towns existing half-and-half approach pending any legislative action or a vote at the town meeting.
During public comment a resident asked why the town had a choice; staff and board members clarified that some municipalities are electing to cover the full 1% but the town had chosen the split as the default pending further local action. After a motion to continue the half-and-half split through Town Meeting in June, the board voted in favor with no public opposition recorded.
The board did not adopt a permanent policy change; the decision to maintain the split is temporary and will be revisited at the June town meeting or upon legislative developments.
