South Point approves two part-time officers; police report large multi-jurisdictional drug seizure

The South Point Village Council voted March 3 to approve hiring Ryan McKenzie and Austin Baldwin as part-time police officers after the chief described their training and availability. Mr. McKenzie is in the police academy and will enter the scheduling rotation upon completion; Mr. Baldwin will be an on-call auxiliary officer.
During department reports the chief described recent collaborative drug enforcement work with the Lawrence County Drug Task Force and neighboring agencies, reporting seizures that included about 47 pounds of marijuana, additional narcotics (including oxycodone), and more than $30,000 in cash. The chief said the county-level equitable-sharing process will determine disposition of cash and property seizures and that the recent operation proceeded without incident.
The chief also reported that camera/video storage for council meetings appears limited to roughly two hours on battery power, and staff plan to run permanent power to cameras to improve retention. Fire and compliance reports included a recent structure fire response and increased code-enforcement activity to remove accumulated trash at several properties.
The hires passed on a roll call vote with Mrs. Chapman dissenting; council said bolstering staffing is part of a broader effort to increase patrols and collaborate with the drug task force.
