Southampton Township Committee reviews 2019 budget options, sets April 3 follow-up

Mayor James F. Young, Sr. called the Southampton Township Committee to order at 6:45 p.m. March 19 at the Robert L. Thompson Building for a budget workshop focused on the 2019 municipal budget. Committeeman Ronald Heston, the liaison to finance, led the review of preliminary appropriation requests prepared by the CFO.
The committee’s discussion centered on how to allocate available surplus. Committeeman Mikulski said the township “may want to look at using surpluses to pay down debt,” while noting the intent to leave reserves at a comfortable level. Committeeman Bill Raftery questioned whether it would be prudent to fund a planned celebration now or instead allocate the money toward vehicles or maintenance.
The Municipal Clerk/Administrator read the Open Public Meetings Act notice to confirm proper public notice procedures had been followed. During the public comment period, the clerk explained that members of the public are allotted up to three minutes to speak and that the Committee would not publicly address personnel matters; no members of the public spoke.
After discussing the budget line items and preliminary requests, the committee agreed to reconvene at 7:00 p.m. April 3, 2019 to continue budget review. The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 p.m. on a motion from Committeeman Mikulski, seconded by Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Rossell; a roll-call vote was unanimous in the affirmative.
The follow-up session will revisit the preliminary appropriation requests prepared by the CFO and any proposals for surplus allocation, debt repayment, capital purchases and maintenance priorities.
