Select Board moves to address Transfer Station DEP findings and approves storage units

Transfer Station supervisor Mark Thurston told the board he has begun the inspection corrections and raised concerns about service shortcomings from a new bin pickup company. Brianne Bailey said she will contact the DEP to acknowledge receipt of the inspection report by the agency’s Sept. 5 deadline and emphasized that the town must meet specified timelines to avoid fines.
The board voted unanimously to approve an SR1 quote of $5,920 for two storage units, including delivery. Chair Brian Mills said the annual meeting had previously authorized up to $10,000 for these units.
Board members flagged specific compliance tasks noted in the DEP report, including preparing an Operations Manual (a template was provided with the inspection report), establishing a designated area for hot-barrel burning within 30 days and reporting any future oil spills to the proper authorities. Justin Thacker cautioned the board to track deadlines closely because state agencies can impose fines for missed requirements.
The board also discussed whether town road crew personnel should be allowed to transport private fill material to town property; Mark Thurston had requested permission to dump a load at the end of his driveway but withdrew the request after the board said it would adopt a policy first. That motion was recorded as made by Brian Mills and seconded by Justin Thacker and recorded as three Nays.
The Select Board instructed Bailey and the Transfer Station supervisor to follow up with the DEP and return with a compliance schedule and documentation at a future meeting.
