Fire chief asks China Select Board to place $650,000 tanker warrant on ballot after federal grant denial

China Village Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joel Nelson asked the China Select Board on March 10 to place a warrant article on the upcoming ballot to fund a new tanker after the department’s federal grant application was denied.
Nelson told the board the department “applied for a federal grant for a new tanker but was denied back in December. They missed the deadline to reapply last month,” and that vendor quotes the department has received are in the neighborhood of $650,000. Nelson said the department contacted four vendors and has provided at least one quote to the town manager; he said the department will bring additional quotes, including for used trucks, to a future meeting.
Town Manager Rebecca Hapgood and Selectman Blane Casey asked staff to look for used-truck options and additional price comparisons before the board places any warrant article before voters. No binding vote or appropriation was taken at the March 10 meeting.
