Andover Select Board approves cemetery gate funding, town office renovation and routine warrants

The Andover Select Board unanimously approved a series of administrative actions at its Aug. 19 meeting, including an additional $500 appropriation to expand a cemetery gate opening, a contract for town office renovations, and the payment of several routine warrants.
Steve Marston told the board the cemetery’s quoted gate needs to be enlarged to a 12-foot opening so vault vehicles can enter; the Select Board voted to appropriate an extra $500 from the cemetery account for the work. Chair Brian Mills made the motion and Justin Thacker seconded; the vote was unanimous.
The board agreed to contract with Hussey & Son for renovations to the Town Office in a contract not to exceed $25,000. Members said flooring replacement should be prioritized and requested a separate electrical estimate because electrical work was not included in the contractor’s estimate. The motion to award the contract passed unanimously.
Financial business included approval of Wage Warrant #8 in the amount of $4,451.08 and an $876.22 amendment to Warrant #7 (revising it to $5,155.23) for federal payroll taxes; the board also approved payments to vendors: Archies ($2,401.33), CMP ($1,467.74), Elan ($1,604.65), Maine Municipal Employee Health Trust ($1,591.41) and Waste Management ($1,653.27). Each payment motion passed unanimously.
Barb Simmons reported she had organized Treasurer files from 2007–2018 and marked boxes for shredding; Town Clerk Melinda Averill said a 2026 warrant article will be needed to fund professional shredding services.
The board also agreed to post public notice and attend an AVCOG (Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments) meeting at 1 p.m. on Aug. 20.
What happens next: Hussey & Son will be engaged to begin renovation planning with the board prioritizing flooring replacement and requesting an electrical estimate; the cemetery contractor will proceed upon procurement and funds transfer from the cemetery account.
