Scott City leaders review towing contract options, storm response and Summerfest cleanup

City officials used the June 1 meeting to review an April towing incident and outline next steps, and to report on storm impacts and festival cleanup.
Mayor Rick Brashear said he and City Administrator Dustin Whitworth are researching what other cities’ towing contracts include and that the city may put towing services out to bid. Whitworth said the city currently operates on month-to-month agreements, that towing rates vary between providers, and that a bid package is under review by the city attorney. "Currently any business bidding on City towing must live in a half mile of the City," Whitworth said; council members will be given the opportunity to review the draft bid package.
Police Chief Chris Griggs reported the department had received a Blue Shield Designation that would allow the city to pursue grants; he said he is awaiting the grant opening. Fire Chief Shawn Jackson said the department responded to 13 callouts during a storm on May 31, mostly for downed limbs and trees and limbs in power lines. Parks Director Skylar Cobb summarized Summerfest (May 28–30): Thursday attendance was slow, Friday was rained out though the band played, Saturday was muddy but busy, fireworks proceeded, and crews have begun moving equipment. Cobb said the municipal pool opened May 30 but closed early due to rain and crews spent about five hours cleaning storm debris the following morning; ballgames will continue for a couple more weeks.
The council did not take formal action on towing at this meeting; officials described the next step as drafting a bid package and having it reviewed by the city attorney before presenting it to council for consideration. The council adjourned at 7:21 p.m.
