The Lisbon School Committee recognized the district's Unified basketball team and heard personal accounts from a parent and a student helper about the program's impact.
Alicia Renda, parent of Mackenzie Ranta, said the program has produced meaningful growth in her daughter: "When Mackenzie 1st joined as a helper, I assumed she would be giving support. What I didn't expect was how much she would grow in return." Renda described gains in patience, self-awareness and leadership.
Griffin Turner, a senior and helper, told the committee the experience reshaped how he sees teammates and school: "Being part of this team is one of the most rewarding experience of my life as a student." Coaches and administrators praised the program as emphasizing inclusion and character rather than winning.
The committee noted the season's successes and encouraged community members to attend future games and support the program.
