Guffey Charter School board hires middle‑school teacher, OKs community programs and playground planning

Dean Wilson, chair of the Guffey Community Charter School Board, called the Aug. 14 meeting to order at 5:35 p.m. and the board approved routine business before turning to community linkage items.
The board approved the meeting agenda, accepted the minutes of the June 12 regular meeting (4 ayes, 1 abstention from Wilson) and approved the consent agenda, each by motion and recorded ayes. The board also acknowledged its review of governance and monitoring documents including GP‑2, GP‑4, GP‑15, BSR‑5 and the bylaws.
The meeting’s principal substantive item involved community partnerships and staffing. Amy Owen has been hired to teach the middle‑school class this school year under the supervision of Lynda MacDonald. Anna Clare Monlezun, identified as a community member and rangeland ecosystem scientist, has developed a program called Schools to Pasture at her Guffey ranch, La Vita Dolce; the minutes state that Guffey students will participate in that program on Oct. 24.
The board recorded that Jistine Harrison, named as the new superintendent of schools for Park County School District RE‑2, plans to visit district schools frequently. Board members discussed a plan to upgrade playground equipment; Kelli Maguire selected swings from Playground Outfitters and will meet with a local builder to get an estimate. Fundraising ideas noted in the minutes include a talent show, a spaghetti dinner, and a 50/50 raffle; Wild Spirit offered to host a fundraising event.
The minutes list current enrollment at 26 students. Board secretary Beth Hall will chair the next meeting on Sept. 11. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
