Chief Financial Officer Chelsey Gerard told the Garfield County School District No. 16 board on April 8 that the district’s preliminary fiscal year 2026 budget is being developed around updated student counts and a soon‑to‑be‑finalized state finance formula.
"The forecast for Garfield 16 would be to receive an additional $550,000.00 from last year based on an increased student count," Gerard said, noting the district will use a 1,100‑student projection for FY2026 provided by the Colorado Department of Education while the district’s most recent count was 1,213 students. Gerard said the Colorado school finance formula was expected to be finalized by May 1.
The CFO also reported that the district engaged with the Colorado River BOCES for a budget review and that a follow‑up meeting would be held to address questions. Gerard’s estimate is a preliminary projection pending final state calculations and the district’s final enrollment confirmation.
Next steps identified at the meeting include the finance office incorporating the finalized formula and updated enrollment into the FY2026 budget and presenting follow‑up information as needed in subsequent board meetings.
