Garfield 16 board approves several policies on first reading, tables CASB nondiscrimination revisions

At its Sept. 10 meeting, the Garfield County School District No. 16 Board of Directors approved several Board of Education policies on first reading and tabled another set of policy revisions pending further work by the Colorado Association of School Boards.
The board approved first-reading adoption of policy updates covering name changes (ACA), graduation requirements and related documents (IKF, IKFB, IKF-E), student dress code (JICA), bullying prevention and investigation forms (JICDE and JICDE-E-2), student interviews/searches (JIH), first aid and emergency medical care (JLCE), and crisis management (KDE). The motion was moved by Vincent T. Tomasulo, seconded by Keith Gronewoller, and passed on a roll call of four ayes with one member absent.
Separately, the board voted to table a set of revisions submitted for second reading and final adoption that were prepared by the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB). Policies tabled included nondiscrimination/equal opportunity (AC and AC-E exhibits), harassment and discrimination investigation procedures for students and employees (AC-R series), and related sex-based harassment policies and exhibits (GBAA, JBB, AC-E-1, AC-E-2). The board’s stated reason for tabling was to allow CASB to make further revisions before the district takes final action.
