The Jourdanton City Council on April 20 unanimously directed staff to work with a community volunteer to craft a formal plan for a pollinator (bee and butterfly) garden at Jourdanton City Park and approved changes to the city's animal-control code while authorizing a consultant to evaluate agricultural impacts under Texas law.
Councilmember Katrina Wiatrek moved, and Councilmember Pamela Manning seconded, a motion directing staff to work with Ms. Yaws to gather site-layout details, draft a maintenance agreement and a cost breakdown, and to treat the initiative as a city project rather than as funding for an individual; the motion passed unanimously. The council did not adopt a finalized site plan at the meeting but asked staff to return with the details at the next meeting.
The action follows brief discussion about park improvements and reflects council interest in adding native-plant and pollinator-friendly landscaping at public sites. City staff will develop the site plan, maintenance arrangements and a budget for future council review.
Separately, the council voted unanimously to authorize the City Manager to hire a qualified consultant to prepare the report required under Texas Agriculture Code $251.0055. That report is intended to analyze proposed animal-ordinance amendments'particularly where the rules intersect with agricultural uses.
Following authorization for the consultant, Councilmember Pamela Manning moved and Councilmember Katrina Wiatrek seconded approval of an ordinance amending Chapter 2 (Animal Control) of the Jourdanton Code of Ordinances. The ordinance as approved excludes provisions related to agricultural operations and specifically excludes section 2.02.003 concerning keeping hogs. The council voted unanimously to adopt the amendments.
