Board approves drug- and alcohol-free workplace policy and several consent items, including safety coordinator hire
Summary
On June 15 the Geneva CUSD 304 board moved and seconded adoption of Policy 550 (drug- and alcohol-free workplace) at second reading and approved a consent agenda that included personnel actions, monthly financials, hazardous bus routes, capital project authorizations and hiring a safety and security coordinator (Mike Freers) and school resource officer (Curtis Shyon).
The Geneva CUSD 304 board approved the second reading and moved to adopt Policy 550 (drug- and alcohol-free workplace) and approved the consent agenda at its June 15 meeting, which included multiple personnel and operational items.
During the meeting, the policy was presented for second reading after administrative and policy-committee review; a trustee made a motion to approve the policy and it was seconded on the floor.
On the consent agenda, trustees voted to approve personnel reports (resignations, retirements, leaves, changes in assignment and new hires), monthly financials, FY27 hazardous bus routes, a FY27 treasurer's bond, project authorization for 27-28 capital projects and an agreement with AB Staffing Solutions LLC. Board discussion on personnel items included clarification about hires for safety positions: administration said Curtis Shyon, a GPD officer, will serve as the new school resource officer and Mike Freers, a retired GPD officer currently serving in a neighboring district, will be hired as the district's safety and security coordinator and bring law-enforcement and large-district experience.
Votes on individual consent items were taken as part of the omnibus consent motion recorded on the meeting floor. The board then moved into executive session to consider matters related to employment and appointments.
