The Marion County Board of Commissioners on June 1 approved a resolution amending the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility population limit, setting a recommended maximum of 32 juveniles at one time.
Chuck Sybrandt and Bruce Armstrong presented the resolution and told the board the department previously had a capacity resolution from 2005. Presenters said the county’s juvenile facility has 54 physical beds but that one 24-bed unit has been closed and the standard operating capacity is 28 youths; based on current staffing and budgeted resources the department recommended establishing 32 as the maximum population.
Board members cited trends of youth with multiple needs, including mental health issues and Measure 11 charges, and noted the community lacks wraparound services. Presenters said the Pay for Success Grant could fund wraparound services that address behavioral and family needs rather than focusing solely on youth behavior.
Commissioner Janet Carlson moved to approve the resolution amending the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility population limit; Commissioner Sam Brentano seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. The resolution was approved; no further implementing budget action was specified in the meeting record.
