Officials say contractor responded after missed pickups; law director to review contract

City officials told Broadview Heights City Council on April 27 that a garbage-collection contractor has taken steps to address recent service failures after the city escalated complaints.

Service Director David Schroedel said he emailed Rumpke and met with the regional vice president, who visited the city, heard the city’s concerns and "apologized," Schroedel said. President of Council Robert Boldt said the regional vice president gave him his cell number and asked to be notified when pickups are missed: "He gave me his cell phone number. I am to call him at four, five o'clock any Friday, anytime anything is missed," Boldt said.

Why it matters: Missed or inconsistent trash pickups are a recurring quality-of-service concern for residents. City staff want both near-term correction and contractual clarity so the city can hold the contractor to service obligations.

What the city says it did: Schroedel reported he compiled a list of problem streets and shared examples of missed service with Rumpke; the contractor's regional representative said crews had personnel changes and unfamiliar drivers, and pledged improved performance. Boldt said inspectors and staff will monitor service going forward.

Council response and next steps: Councilor Jennifer Mahnic asked whether the Law Director would review the contract to confirm remedies and reporting expectations. Boldt said he expects the Law Director, Vince Ruffa, to research the contract language and return recommendations; Schroedel and council members said they will test the contractor’s responsiveness over the next weeks.
