Residents raise safety concerns about deteriorated guardrail on Water Street; Selectboard to review temporary fixes

Multiple residents and local contractors urged the Castine Selectboard to address a deteriorated guardrail on Water Street that they said poses a risk to people and property.
Property owner Ted Coladarci and contractor Curtis Jaffray described the guardrail condition near a newly built boathouse and warned that a vehicle could go off the road into the boathouse. “It is a dangerous situation. Someone could get hurt and it's a liability for the Town,” Coladarci said. Jaffray expressed similar safety concerns. Danielle Mutty suggested making that stretch of Water Street one-way on a seasonal basis.
Resident Scott Vogell suggested the town consider using the jersey barriers stored at the Transfer Station as a temporary measure and noted the town might need to purchase or rent additional barriers. Selectboard Chair Roberta Boczkiewicz said the board viewed this as a public-safety issue and directed the item be discussed at the next Work Session, including consideration of temporary and permanent solutions.
No formal vote was taken; the board discussed scheduling the topic for a future work session and possible interim mitigation options.
