The Castine Selectboard unanimously authorized Town Manager Derik Goodine to apply for $2.5 million in Congressionally Directed Spending to support construction of a new Castine fire station.
Derik Goodine said the applications will be submitted to both U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ and Sen. Angus King’s offices, with filing deadlines on April 14 and April 15. He told the board the town will begin preliminary design work for the station after the June 7, 2025 town meeting. “We are asking for $2.5 million,” Goodine said.
Chair Roberta Boczkiewicz moved the motion and the board approved it 3-0. The vote authorizes staff to prepare and submit grant applications but does not commit municipal matching funds; any required match or design costs will be considered in future budget discussions. Goodine told the board that an Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) and station budget work remain preliminary and that he has participated in webinars with congressional staff about the CDS process.
Next steps include drafting application language, coordinating with the senator offices’ deadlines, and advancing preliminary design after the June 7 town meeting. The Selectboard did not set a specific local funding commitment during the meeting.
