Council adopts vape-retailer licensing: $250 annual fee and new enforcement powers

Council members said the licensing fee will give cities a mechanism to audit compliance and, where illegal or underage products are found, to move to revoke licenses. The motion referenced Public Act 26-8, which municipal attorneys said expands municipal authority to seek remedies including referral to the attorney general or consumer-protection officials and summary closure in serious cases involving illegal products.
Supporters said the provision is intended as a public-health tool to keep illegal and underage products out of shops and to give the city more immediate enforcement options rather than rely solely on state action.
