Selectmen appoint Budget Committee members after debate over Fire Chief's participation

The Bremen Board of Selectmen on Feb. 6 appointed seven residents to the town's Budget Committee amid a brief dispute over the Fire Chief's inclusion.
Chair Wendy Pieh read the nominations for the Budget Committee: John Mohr Jr., Mary Sue Weeks, Mark Tenney, Eric Teele, Joseph Vitti, Jane Oliver-Gravel and Tom Papell. Bruce Poland, a member of the Harbor Committee, said he did not think Fire Chief Eric Teele should serve on the Budget Committee because of the department's interests in budget items.
Town Clerk Melanie Pendleton responded that the chief would recuse from any discussion or vote on items that directly related to the Fire Department; she noted the committee already includes another committee chair who similarly recuses when relevant. Selectman John "Boe" Marsh said the town's small population and reliance on volunteers make such participation important and that recusal addresses direct conflicts.
Selectman Steve Page moved to appoint the named nominees to the Bremen Budget Committee; Chair Pieh seconded. The motion passed 3-0.
The minutes record that the selectmen signed Deputy Fire Warden certificates during the meeting.
