Story County canvassers certify June 2 primary results, note low turnout and some open nominations

The Story County Board of Supervisors, meeting as the Board of Canvassers, met on June 9, 2026, and unanimously approved a resolution certifying the results of the June 2 primary election.
Supervisor Lisa Heddens, presiding, moved approval of Resolution #26-96; Supervisor Linda Murken seconded and the motion carried on a roll-call vote. Latifah Faisal was recorded as absent. The board then declared the canvass complete and directed the Auditor to file and distribute the certifications to the appropriate parties and jurisdictions.
Auditor Lucy Martin explained that Iowa’s primary is a party nomination process and that federal and state race results will be forwarded to the Secretary of State for collective canvass, while county-level certifications will be sent to the political parties. Martin said both state parties will meet Saturday to select a lieutenant-governor nominee to run on the general-election ticket.
Martin reported six provisional ballots were cast in the primary, one of which was accepted; roughly 200 voters registered on Election Day. County turnout was 18.5%, she said, compared with a statewide turnout of just over 19%. Martin noted at least two precincts saw almost no turnout because they are heavily student-populated.
The board recorded nominees for county offices from the June 2 primary. Democratic nominees for the Board of Supervisors were listed as Linda Murken (District 1), Ross Eveland (District 2) and Latifah Faisal (District 3). Republican nominees for the Board of Supervisors were listed as Jeff Staton (District 1), Martin Chitty (District 2) and Kirk Nesset (District 3). Other recorded nominees included Democratic County Treasurer Ted Rasmusson, Republican County Recorder Stacie Herridge and Democratic County Attorney Timothy Meals.
Martin also noted several offices lacked nominees from a party: the Democratic Party had no county recorder nominee on the primary ballot, and the Republican Party had no county treasurer or county attorney nominees. She said parties can fill those vacancies at special county conventions.
The meeting record and canvass documents were placed on file in the Auditor’s office. The Board adjourned at 9:37 a.m.
