Sinton council accepts 2025 racial profiling report showing 3,401 traffic stops and zero complaints

The Sinton City Council on Jan. 20 approved the Sinton Police Department's 2025 racial profiling report, presented by City Manager John Hobson in the absence of Police Chief Eric Blanchard.

The report, as read to the council, recorded 3,401 total traffic stops in 2025. Of those stops, 3,197 occurred on city streets, 44 on U.S. highways, 29 on state highways, 4 on county roads and 127 on private property. The department reported there were zero racial profiling complaints during the year.

The presentation included a race and ethnicity breakdown showing 2,302 stops of Hispanic/Latino drivers, 986 of White drivers, 81 of Black drivers, 14 of Asian/Pacific Islander drivers and 18 of Alaska Native/American Indian drivers. Gender totals listed 1,454 female stops and 1,947 male stops with further cross-tabulation by race in the report.

The report summarized reasons for stops and outcomes: 649 listed as violation of law, 2,594 as moving traffic violations and 158 as vehicle traffic violations; outcomes included 1,986 written warnings, 1,389 citations, 21 written warning & arrest and 5 citation & arrest dispositions. The department recorded no "verbal warning" dispositions in the provided tally.

Councilmember Nathan Lindeman moved to approve the report; Councilmember Lulu Lopez seconded and the motion carried 4-0 with Mayor Mary Speidel, Mayor Pro Tem Greg Ybarra, Lindeman and Lopez voting in favor and Councilmember Edward Adams absent.

Minutes show no additional follow-up or requests for supplemental data at the meeting. City Manager Hobson presented the material on Chief Blanchard's behalf and no public comments were made specifically about the report at the meeting.
