The Ellsworth City Council authorized the city manager and the school superintendent March 16 to enter a contract to replace the deteriorated Ellsworth High School track and to recondition the adjacent soccer field, with a bid award of $749,565.
Staff and a city-school review committee evaluated proposals and recommended the low/highest-scoring bidder for a record-tan track surface and associated site work. The project is funded through a previously approved bond authorization; councilors discussed and encouraged local fundraising to supplement the bond and offset roughly one-third of projected costs.
Councilors emphasized the long-term need — the existing track dates from the late 1980s and is now functionally unsafe for meets — and approved the contract so that contractors can complete work this summer after school ends. Council also asked staff to pursue naming-rights and fundraising options and to coordinate any required legal or bond-administration steps with the school.
The motion to authorize contract execution carried on a 5–2 vote.
