Commissioners approve Drug-Free fund grants drawn from $200 case fee

The Whitley County Board of Commissioners voted June 15 to approve the 2026 funding request from the Drug-Free Indiana committee representing Drug-Free Whitley County.
Julie Jensen Kelly said the fund is supported by a $200 fee assessed on each drug and alcohol criminal case; the fee is collected by community corrections, the clerk's office and probation, pooled in an account, and distributed annually via grants that must be divided among prevention, criminal justice and treatment. She noted a calendar change at the state level will shift the board's next funding request schedule; the committee expects to return in December with a smaller request, then resume a January schedule in future years.
A commissioner moved to approve the request "as requested;" the motion was seconded and carried by voice/hand vote.
The board did not change the fund's allocation rules; staff and the committee will monitor the changed calendar for future requests.
