Villa Park Green Commission to pilot fishing-line collection and continues composting policy work

The Villa Park Green Commission on June 16 said it is moving forward with early plans to reduce discarded fishing line at local ponds and is continuing work on a village composting policy.

Commissioners reported they are exploring placing dedicated containers at pond sites so anglers can dispose of line safely rather than leaving it as litter or an entanglement hazard. The commission described the effort as a container-based collection program rather than a full recycling system; operational details and launch timing remain under discussion.

"We are still looking into that, but we will be working on figuring out how we're going to get this recycling set up for our three different ponds that need them," a commissioner said during the meeting. The commission did not set a launch date at the session and said staff and commissioners will continue to refine the plan.

Village board liaison Patrick reiterated that the commission has been discussing collection containers at Twin Lakes, Terrace Pond and Lufkin and urged commissioners to continue one-on-one conversations and bring proposals back to the village board when they are ready. He also said the commission is seeking an additional member and a chair to reach full membership.

The commission also reported that the village composting sites and a composting policy remain under development; no final policy was presented at the meeting. Commissioners said further work is needed to determine locations and program details before recommending actions to the village board.

The commission did not take formal action on either item at the June 16 meeting and agreed to continue work outside the regular meeting schedule.
