The commission voted to establish a Garden Village award to publicly recognize individuals and groups who perform noteworthy conservation, cleanup or beautification efforts in Villa Park. Members proposed a certificate program, periodic recognition (quarterly or as nominations arise), and a formal recommendation to the village board so recipients can also be acknowledged at board meetings.
Commissioners cited a recent volunteer creek cleanup — which collected an estimated 25 bags of trash — as an example of the sort of grassroots efforts the award would honor. The commission agreed the award could be flexible: nominations could be made as events occur and recipients invited to the next meeting for formal presentation, with a quarterly roundup if multiple nominees arise.
Separately, the commission moved and approved adding an item to the next agenda to discuss reinvigorating the village’s Adopt‑a‑Tree program and possibly assuming responsibility for the existing landscaping/landscape award. Commissioners agreed staff could provide background on how the existing award operates and the commission would explore taking on the program if appropriate.
The motions passed by voice vote; members agreed to draft certificate artwork, set nomination and presentation cadence, and coordinate communications outreach with village staff.
