Brooklyn Heights examines Schaaf Road bike-lane plan; engineer to verify measurements

The Village of Brooklyn Heights is considering a plan to add dedicated bike lanes on Schaaf Road as part of a safety-committee proposal discussed at the Jan. 20 council meeting.
Safety Committee member Berzins described a plan that, pending final measurements, would include a five-foot bike lane on each side of Schaaf Road while maintaining the required ten-foot travel lanes in both directions. The proposed lanes would extend from the bridge that is scheduled for replacement in 2027 to just before Tuxedo Avenue, where the roadway narrows and no longer meets the width requirements.
Engineer Jennifer Zoldak told council she will verify additional measurements and return with more information so the project can be revisited. Mayor Mike Procuk said he hopes narrowing travel lanes where possible will help slow vehicle speeds and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
No ordinance or final design was adopted at the meeting; the item remains in the committee and engineering review stage.
