The Pownal Conservation Commission reviewed early use of the newly conserved Elmwood Road property and discussed parking, trail conditions and next steps.
Marie Wendt, who lives near the property, said she has seen some attempts at snowmobiling and skied the property in poor snow conditions. She reported attending a Royal River Conservation Trust (RRCT) event where participants discussed a dip on the trail and were told trail improvements would be the town’s responsibility. Commissioners noted increased parking by hunters during hunting season, including handicapped hunters, and said the trailhead access is sometimes narrowed with rocks outside hunting season. Matt Welch said a cable could be reinstalled to limit parking if numbers become excessive, and commissioners suggested placing a suggestion box at the site to gather public feedback.
No formal management action or capital work was authorized at the meeting; members said they will continue to monitor use and suggested encouraging visitors to use the trailhead parking across the road.
