Residents press Mount Arlington council on Board of Education budget shortfall

Several residents used the April 1 public comment period to press the borough about a reported Board of Education budget deficit and to ask the council to consider reallocating municipal funds.
Maria Panycia and Jess Price described frustration with consequences from the school’s budget shortfall and requested that the governing body reevaluate the 2025 municipal budget to allocate additional funds to cover the deficit. Nancy Absalon told the council the borough has a responsibility to pay the school and additionally asked the borough to purchase Kadel Beach for public use and to install a traffic signal at Minnisink and Howard Boulevard.
Mayor Stanzilis responded that the school budget is crafted by the Board of Education and submitted to the borough for payment and that the borough is legally required to pay the amount transmitted by the school’s governing body. He emphasized that the borough will do what it can to support the Board of Education but did not announce any reallocation of municipal funds during the meeting. No council motion to alter the municipal budget in favor of additional school funding was recorded.
