Residents press council for sidewalks, trails and a crosswalk; county and safety limits noted

Residents at the April 1 Borough of Mount Arlington meeting urged the council to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and asked for updates on local projects.
Cameron M. told the council he supports bike paths in town and asked whether a crosswalk could be installed near the Pizza Express plaza on Howard Boulevard. Mayor Stanzilis said Howard Boulevard is a county road and that Morris County would need to approve and install a crosswalk. Sgt. Ryan Sherburne advised safety measures for crossing and reviewed how certain electric bikes must be registered; he urged riders to treat e‑bikes as bicycles and to use them responsibly.
Isabella I. asked whether borough representatives attend Morris County meetings; Councilwoman Galate said she is the borough’s liaison to Morris County and attends those meetings, and she explained how the county interacts with municipalities. Councilman Cangiano described current and planned projects, saying McGregor Avenue improvements are underway, a pump station near the school is substantially complete with landscaping to follow, and Fireman’s Field will receive improvements. Administrator Carolyn Rinaldi said the basketball court at Fireman’s Field will be improved and restriped as a multiuse court to accommodate basketball and pickleball using grant funding.
Council members said a walkability assessment is in progress and that the borough is pursuing trails to connect parts of town so residents can walk and bike more safely. On the proposed crosswalk at Howard Boulevard, Councilman Cangiano said the county would perform a safety assessment but suggested the specific location described by the resident may lack the sight distance required for a county‑installed crosswalk.
Summer L. asked about the former Catholic school; Mayor Stanzilis said the building is privately owned by a developer who is converting it to apartments. Other public‑comment items included a 7th‑grade class visit and a question posed to Borough Attorney Matthew Jessup about his decision to work in municipal law.
